Changing consumers’ health behaviors is critical for the U.S. healthcare system in the 21st century. Reducing healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes by encouraging adherence to positive health behaviors and medication will have a strong impact on the effectiveness and economics of health care. Fifty years of research on health behaviors have provided excellent models and interventions, but limited results. Combining best-in-class individualized interventions with predictive analytics and decisioning holds promise for addressing the problems of recruitment, retention and relapse re-engagement. The approach of engaging all consumers — including the “uninterested” and those not-yet-ready to change — and keeping them engaged at each stage of change is expected to provide the greatest impact across most behaviors for the most people.
